Sweet Tooth, Sharp Knife: The Official HalloweenFlix Candy-to-Horror Movie Bracket
Every October, the same two questions haunt American households: what are we watching and what are we eating while we watch it? At HalloweenFlix, we decided to stop treating these as separate problems. Snacks and screamers are a package deal, and honestly, some candies have main character energy that demands a specific movie to match.
So we built a bracket. Sixteen candies, seeded by pure editorial whim, each paired with a film that shares its vibe — sweet, divisive, nutty, or straight-up rotten. Think of it as March Madness, except the stakes are fun-size and the upsets happen on your couch.
The Sweet 16: Comfort Candies and Their Cinematic Counterparts
1. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups — Hocus Pocus The crowd-pleaser. Nobody's mad when it shows up, everyone's a little happier after. Salty, sweet, and reliably delightful — just like Bette Midler cackling through a cauldron. This is the movie you put on while the candy bowl is still full and optimism is high.
2. Fun-Size Snickers — Ghostbusters (1984) Satisfying, a little nutty, and it knows exactly what it is. You can eat six of them during the library scene and not feel a thing. Snickers is the comedy-horror gold standard, and so is Venkman.
3. Candy Corn — Midsommar (2019) Hear us out. Candy corn is the most divisive candy in America — people don't feel lukewarm about it, they feel passionately. It's bright, it's festive, it's technically fine, and yet half the room is gagging. That's Ari Aster's sunny horror masterpiece to a T: gorgeous, cheerful-looking, and quietly ruining your evening.
4. Candy Apples — Sleepy Hollow (1999) Shiny, autumnal, gothic as heck, and slightly dangerous to bite into. Tim Burton's headless horseman romp is the only correct pairing for a candy that looks like a fairytale and can crack a filling.
The Regional Four: Candies With Baggage
5. Full-Size Twix — Get Out (2017) Something's off here, but you can't quite put your finger on it. It looks like a normal candy bar. It's being offered by a very polite host. Everything is fine. (Everything is not fine. Left Twix. Right Twix. Sunken place.)
6. Necco Wafers — The Blair Witch Project (1999) Old-timey, chalky, and found in the back of your grandmother's pantry. Like the most famous found-footage film ever made, Neccos feel like they've been sitting somewhere dark for 25 years and might be older than they claim.
7. Candy Necklace — Jennifer's Body (2005) Wear it, chew it, misunderstand it completely. This candy was never taken seriously in its era, and neither was Diablo Cody's razor-sharp cult classic. Time has been kind to both.
8. Bit-O-Honey — The Conjuring (2013) It's been around forever, it's stuck in your teeth, and you can't get rid of it. Sound like a certain demon-possessed house in Rhode Island? Some things latch on and simply don't let go.
The Elite Eight: Nutty, Chewy, and Deeply Unwell
9. Peanut M&M's — Beetlejuice (1988) Colorful, chaotic, and full of nuts. You never know what you're gonna get, and neither does anyone who wanders into the afterlife waiting room.
10. Gummy Eyeballs — Society (1989) Some candies are shaped like body parts for a reason. This one was born to sit next to the most gloriously gooey body-horror film ever committed to film. Eat the eyeballs. Watch the ending. Good luck.
11. Milky Way — The Others (2001) Soft, quiet, elegant, and full of shadows. Nicole Kidman's haunted mansion slow-burn is the classy pick of the bracket, and Milky Way is the classy pick of the candy aisle. Light? What light.
12. Sour Patch Kids — Orphan (2009) First they're sour. Then they're sweet. Then — plot twist — they were never a kid at all. The metaphor writes itself, and Esther approves.
The Final Four: Where the Bracket Gets Rotten
13. Milk Duds — The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) Technically it has all the components of a candy bar, but something is deeply wrong with the texture. It's dry, it clings to your molars, and you keep going back anyway. Sawdust included at no extra charge.
14. Mary Janes — Hereditary (2010s... sorry, 2018) The bottom of the Halloween bag. The candy nobody chose. The one that's been in the bowl since 1997. If any movie captures the dread of receiving a Mary Jane, it's the one where the family can't escape its own rotten inheritance.
15. Raisinets — The Wicker Man (2006) (the Nicolas Cage one) You thought you were getting chocolate. You were betrayed. Somewhere in a bear suit, Cage is screaming about it.
16. Fun-Size 3 Musketeers — Scream (1996) Fluffy, self-aware, and it goes down easy while everything around it gets stabbed. It knows it's candy. It knows you know it's candy. Meta all the way down.
And the Winner Is...
By our completely unscientific scoring (flavor, rewatch value, and chaos factor), the bracket crowns Candy Corn x Midsommar as champion — the ultimate divisive pairing. One half of your watch party will love it unconditionally. The other half will question why they're friends with you at all.
Disagree? Good. That's the whole point. Drop your worst pairing in the comments, print this out for your October movie night, and remember: the candy bowl is bottomless and so is the horror queue. Every October starts here.
